ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The Sartell Baseball Association received a $10,000 check from the Minnesota Twins Community Fund for upgrades to Champion Field.

Jason Mathiasen with the Sartell Baseball Association says the community is getting behind the fundraising and are thrilled about the upgrades.

"When people find out what we're doing and hear about it they're really excited, and they think god this is great, I can't believe it, and it really started off as what can we do for our kids right now? Our kids deserve the best and we want to provide excellent baseball experiences for them."

The $10,000 donated from the Twins will go to renovation of the infield playing surface.

"Youth baseball and softball is important, baseball fields are the community centers of a lot of places that are used for more than just baseball, they're also used for community gatherings and festivals," said Stephanie Johnson, Senior Manager of Community Relations for the Twins.

But the fundraising effort isn't stopping there, Mathiasen hopes to raise $550,000 for new lights, leveling out right field, new fencing and upgrading the entire playing surface so it drains better.

He also has some upgrades to the bullpens and batting cages, but those would be the last to get renovated if Sartell Baseball is able to raise enough money.

St. Cloud Orthopedics is kicking in money for naming rights to the field, starting next year Champion Field will be called St. Cloud Orthopedics Field.

All the effort and fundraising isn't being ignored by the kids involved with Sartell Baseball.

"I love Sartell Baseball, we get a lot of fun out it, and a lot of people help out, so it's really fun," said Andrew Ritter, a pitcher on the Sartell 12U AAA team.
