ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A new report says things are looking up for Minnesota's organic farms.
The annual report on organic farm performance from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and University of Minnesota says 2010 was a good year but not a stellar year for these farms after a very financially challenging 2009.
It says profits improved but were not outstanding. Yet it says their balance sheets, on average, were very sound as they headed into 2011.
The report says Minnesota organic dairies, on average, generated solid profits, while organic crop farms were less profitable.
While the report says Minnesota's conventional farms, on average, outperformed organic farms in 2010, it doesn't mean the state's organic farms performed poorly. Rather, it says, the state's conventional farms had an exceptionally profitable 2010.
