ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) - The St. Cloud City Council has denied a request to re-zone a piece of property allowing for an apartment development on the site.
The property at 712 17th Avenue South is the current location for Good News Assembly of God Church and the former site of Garfield Elementary School. The church wants to sell the property and relocate, and re-zoning it would open up options for potential buyers.
"I don't think anyone really opposes the use, but they want more details," St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said on KNSI's 'Meet the Mayor' Tuesday morning. "If you're changing the zoning, that's why we have the process. I think the council made the right decision."
Neighbors did voice concerns that if the property were re-zoned, it could impact traffic and crime in that area, along with their own property values. The city council tabled the request last month, and then unanimously voted against it last night.
