ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP/KNSI) - Police in St. Paul cleared protesters who shut down a downtown freeway following a suburban officer's acquittal in the shooting death last year of a black motorist.

Early Saturday morning, a line of police confronted a crowd of hundreds of protesters who initially marched onto Interstate 94 late Friday night.

The protest followed the acquittal Friday afternoon of Officer Jeronimo Yanez. He was charged with manslaughter in the death Philando Castile last July.

After a standoff of more than 90 minutes, the crowd dwindled and officers forced the remaining protesters off the interstate.

Law enforcement arrested 18 protesters after giving them a five minute warning to leave the area.

The interstate reopened early Saturday morning.
