ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The Benton County Sheriff's Office says a man walked in front of a train near Sartell and was struck and killed.

It happened around 5:30 Friday morning at the railroad crossing at North Benton Drive and NE River Road.

Investigators say Dale John Fries, 54, of Sauk Rapids, was the man killed.

At the crossing, there are two sets of tracks and investigators say Fries' car was stuck on the west set of tracks.

The crossing is impassable due to repair work and barricades are in place on both sides.

The sheriff's office says Fries drove around the barricades and became stuck on the west set of tracks.

Two witnesses in the train, which was traveling northbound on the east set of tracks, said they saw Fries standing outside his car and sounded their horn and applied their brakes to warn the man of the oncoming train.

Witnesses in the train told investigators that Fries walked in front of the train as it approached and was hit.

No collision occurred between the train and Fries' vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation.

The sheriff's office says the barricade arms, flashing lights and bells were all working at the time of the incident.
