COLLEGEVILLE, MN (KNSI) - Michael Hemesath's official appointment as the new president of St. John's University began Sunday, although he won't officially be on campus for three more weeks.

Hemesath is a St. John's graduate, and the first lay president the university has had in its 155 year history. He comes to Collegeville from Carleton College, where he's been serving as a member of the economics faculty and faculty president.

He replaces the Reverend Robert Koopman, who plans to return to the St. John's faculty.

A farewell social for Koopman will be held Thursday, and a welcome social for Hemesath will be held July 23rd.
