UNDATED (KNSI) New figures from ClearWay Minnesota suggest a lot of smokers have been trying to quit since the state's cigarette tax went up a $1.60.
Spokesman Mike Sheldon says their QUITPLAN Services have seen a major spike in user volume since July 1st, with calls to the helpline increasing over 250-percent, and an even larger jump in website hits.
Sheldon says research from Minnesota and other states clearly shows tobacco price increases are effective at helping smokers kick the habit.
Average price per pack in Minnesota is now about $7.50. QUITPLAN provides free counseling over the phone and things like nicotine patches, gum and lozenges.
