MONTICELLO, Minn. (KNSI) Xcel Energy says a controlled, non-emergency shutdown of the Monticello nuclear plant began on Friday.
The shut down was done so a heat exchanger in the reactor's coolant system can be repaired.
An Xcel spokeswoman says the plant was shut down with all safety systems functioning, and workers will now make repairs. There was no release of radioactivity, and the situation poses no hazard to the public or plant workers.
The Monticello nuclear plant generates 600 megawatts of electricity and is owned and operated by Xcel Energy.
