FERGUS FALLS, MN (AP) - A 17-year-old rural Ottertail boy is making a good recovery after being burned in a black powder explosion last month.
The father of Ryan Melchior says his son is expected to be released from Hennepin County Medical Center Friday or Monday.
The Perham (PUR'-uhm) High School student suffered second-degree burns on about 20 percent of his skin when black powder he was trying to burn exploded May 30.
Tim Melchior says his son was not playing with the powder but was trying to get rid of it by wetting it down and burning it off.
The Daily Journal reports much more of the 80-year-old powder ignited than Melchior anticipated. The explosion left burning, wet powder clinging to his clothes.
Doctors applied skin grafts from the teen's thighs to his chest and arms.
