MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Sweltering heat has prompted Minneapolis Public Schools to cancel classes in more than two dozen buildings for the rest of the week.
The district canceled classes today and Friday in buildings lacking air conditioning. Classes at those sites will resume Tuesday, after Labor Day weekend. Students won't have to make up canceled days. All other sites will remain open.
Minneapolis public schools have 18 buildings that lack air conditioning and another 11 with only limited cooling, so schools provided water to help keep students and staff cool and hydrated. But some students had complained about going to class in the stifling heat.
The district says it determined it could not sustain the level of support needed for student health and safety at those locations for the rest of the week.
