ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) - Officers from multiple departments in the Twin Cities Metro Area are engaged in what is being called an intense manhunt in a number of residential neighborhoods in Mendota Heights, concentrating especially on the 2400 block of Pond Circle East.
All of the activity comes after an officer was shot during a traffic stop in the area of West St. Paul and Mendota Heights this afternoon. In the course of their investigation police confirm three people from a home on that block were taken into custody, but have not detailed why those people were detained.
Multiple sources are confirming now the police officer died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Witnesses reported hearing up to three loud pops, believed to be gunshots, around 12:30 at the area of Dodd Road near the intersection of Smith Avenue South. That is right on the border of Mendota Heights and West St. Paul.
There is word of a press conference scheduled for sometime this afternoon. Check back with KNSI as we will bring you more details as they are revealed.
