OLIVIA, Minn. (KNSI) A Hector man was injured Saturday night when he crashed his vehicle into a Renville County Sheriff's Department squad car during a pursuit near Olivia.

Authorities were chasing 22 year-old Cody Kirgiss after getting a report of a driving complaint against him.

A deputy stopped his squad car and had his emergency lights activated when Kirgiss--who was traveling westbound--crossed over the centerline of U.S. Highway 212 and struck the squad car head-on.

The vehicle Kirgiss was driving then rolled onto its side and caught fire.

Kirgiss was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale with severe head injuries.

The squad car was unoccupied when it was hit. Both vehicles were destroyed.

A State Patrol report says alcohol was detected on Kirgiss at the time of the crash.
