ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Representatives of the forestry industry in Minnesota want to make sure legislators know the importance of their contributions to the state economy.
Members of the Bemidji Area Forest Affairs Council and colleagues from the Grand Rapids area are at the state Capitol Tuesday to lobby for their industry. The Minnesota Forest Industries says forestry employs more than 36,000 people in Minnesota.
Council member Peter Aube says funding the Department of Natural Resources' forestry budget is a key area of discussion. Aube says the current budget doesn't contain adequate funding for the state to produce its minimum standard of 800,000 cords a year.
Aube says other concerns include making sure large landowners aren't excluded from a tax rebate made available to small landowners.
