BIG LAKE, Minn. (KNSI) One of the candidates for Michele Bachmann's Sixth District congressional seat is holding a campaign event in Big Lake Friday night.

Phil Krinkie--a Republican--will hold what's being called an "All I Want for Christmas Is Coal" party at 6 pm at KJ's Refuge Bar and Grille. It's in support of the continued operation of the Sherco power plant near Becker.

Environmental groups like the Sierra Club have criticized the plant for its greenhouse gas emissions, and have called on Xcel Energy to begin a plan to shut down the plant and turn to more renewable sources of electricity.

The Public Utilities Commission recently asked Xcel to consider various retirement scenarios as part of a long-range plan that's due in July.

Sherco is Minnesota's largest coal-fired power plant. At a recent PUC hearing, several people testified that closing Sherco would result in the loss of jobs in the Becker area.
