ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) - The search for St. Cloud's next police chief will ramp up next week.

Mayor Dave Kleis tells KNSI News a search committee he formed earlier this year will have up to six candidates in town next Wednesday for interviews. Following those interviews, the committee will forward the names of three finalists to the mayor--who will then conduct a second round of interviews on his own.

The mayor says he's likely to announce his choice sometime next month.

Earlier month Kleis said at a basic level, the criteria for a new cheif comes down to commitment to St. Cloud and a commitment to public safety.

"I'm looking for, first of all, a long term commitment...someone who's going to take the department in the next 10 years forward," Kleis said. "Someone who's experience is with a city of this size a growing population, a university community...public safety is my top priority, and I want to make sure we have a chief that focuses on that."

The vacancy at the top of the department comes after the retirement of St. Cloud chief Dennis Ballentin. A final selection should be made next month.
