MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hennepin County residents are applying for permits to carry a gun in public at a brisk pace this year.
Through the first four months of 2012, the sheriff's office has received 1,875 applications, a 54 percent increase over the same period last year.
Sheriff Rich Stanek tells the Star Tribune that by the end of the year, Hennepin County will break the annual record for applications submitted, That was 3,359 set in 2008.
Since 2003, the sheriff's office has issued nearly 22,000 permits. Of those, about 3,300 are renewals, meaning there are some 18,700 permit holders in Hennepin County.
The Department of Public Safety says across Minnesota last year, more than 22,000 applications were submitted for carrying a gun in public. More than 20,000 of them were granted.
