DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Police say a drunken driver caused the crash that killed a Duluth grandmother and critically injured the grandson she was driving to school.
Sixty-five-year-old Paula Bergren died of injuries in the crash that happened Thursday about 7:30 a.m. Her 13-year-old grandson, Everett Bergren is in intensive care at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Authorities say the driver of the pickup truck that crossed the center line and hit Bergren's car head-on is a 19-year-old man who was not injured. He's being held in the St. Louis County Jail. Police say that excessive speed and reckless driving were also factors in the crash.
The Duluth News Tribune says that in the past, Bergren served as president of the Minnesota Recreation and Sports Federation and was president of the Duluth Softball Players Association.
