WINONA, Minn. (AP) - A grand jury will convene in Winona County Monday involving a fatal shooting by a sheriff's deputy.
A Hennepin County prosecutor will present the findings of a Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation into the shooting of 25-year-old Chase Edward Kolstad in Minnesota City on Sept. 14. The grand jury will determine if there's enough evidence to bring criminal charges against Deputy John Hazelton.
Winona County Sheriff David Brand tells KAGE the grand jury proceedings are scheduled to last three days.
The BCA says authorities had been trying to find Kolstad after getting reports that he was armed and suicidal. Authorities found Kolstad on a bridge in Minnesota City where he was pointing a weapon at himself. The BCA says Kolstad then pointed the weapon at officers and was shot.
