ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - In honor of St. Cloud hosting this year's Governor's Fishing Opener a local veterans group is raising money by selling a limited number of commemorative lures.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 290 will unveil the special spoon lure on Thursday during a fish fry at the Sauk Rapids VFW Post 6992.
Only 500 of the lures are available at a cost of $10 a piece.
Ken Schulte with the local VVA chapter says all profits go to support the fight against agent orange.
"When they would spray it over the top of us the next day we would get up and all the vegetation around us would be dead, but we wouldn't. Well push comes to shove we are finding out 50-years later we are going to be dead. We are losing 30 to 45 Vietnam veterans a month due to agent orange related incidents."
But he says that's not the worst of it.
"Now we are finding it's passing genetically through our Vietnam vets and to children and grandchildren and causing birth defects."
Shulte says as of now the VA doesn’t recognize that agent orange is affecting the next generation.
The group is paying for research that they will present to the VA at some point in the future in the hopes that the VA will begin to assist the next generation dealing with agent orange.
The fish fry is from 4:30 to 7:30 at the Sauk Rapids VFW and the meal is $8.
Live music goes from 7 to 10.
The Governor's Fishing Opener takes place in the Greater St. Cloud area on the Mississippi River May 11th to the 14th.
