LAKE CITY, Minn. (AP) — Court documents say a woman who escaped from a house where a Lake City police officer was shot had recently ended a relationship with the gunman, who took his own life.

The 17-year-old girl told police she broke up with 25-year-old Alan Sylte last week after he became violent. Court documents say Sylte sent the girl 282 messages over the weekend before fighting with her at her family's house in Lake City on Monday.

Police say Sylte shot Officer Shawn Schneider in the head after he responded to a domestic disturbance call at the home. The 32-year-old officer remains hospitalized in critical condition Thursday.

The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/uCR2yI ) reports the girl told investigators she heard gunshots as she fled the house and "felt two rounds go by her" before turning around and seeing the officer go to the ground.
