MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Dozens of Minnesota gay couples were making last-minute wedding preparations as gay marriage has become legal in the state.

Minnesota's new law took effect Thursday at 12:01 am. Weddings started  just after midnight around the state, including at Minneapolis City Hall, Como Park in St. Paul, the Mall of America's Chapel of Love and courthouses elsewhere in the state.

Stearns County Court Administrator Tim Roberts performed a 12:01 a.m. marriage at the courthouse in St. Cloud. He says it's a historic day and he's honored to be part of it.

Rhode Island and Minnesota are becoming the 12th and 13th U.S. states to allow gay marriage Thursday. Rhode Island's first gay weddings are expected to take place later Thursday morning.
