MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A former Minneapolis mayoral candidate says he was injured when someone tried to steal his iPhone at the Mall of America.

Former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew tells the Star Tribune he was attacked outside a coffee shop at the Bloomington mall about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Andrew says he was at a table when someone grabbed his phone and ran out. He says he chased the thief, and two young women waiting outside the Starbucks tackled him. He says one beat him on the head and face with a billy club.

Two females were arrested. Andrew needed nine stitches, but he got his phone back from a passer-by who found it.

Andrew placed second to Betsy Hodges in the November election.
