GRAND FORKS, ND (AP) Bidding for the "Home of the Fighting Sioux" letters that adorned the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks is closed.

The top bid for the letters was $8,000. The name of the winner in the online auction was not immediately available.

Each letter is 2 feet high and the full set is about 70 feet long.

The University of North Dakota has retired the nickname. Arena officials say proceeds from the auction will go to offset the cost of removing six Fighting Sioux signs from the hockey arena and the attached Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

Sixty-eight percent of North Dakota voters last June voted to drop the nickname deemed "hostile and abusive" by the NCAA. The university has not selected a new moniker.
