Duluth council weighs in on same sex marriage

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - The Duluth City Council is expected to weigh in on the issue of same-gender marriage at a meeting Monday night. But, some councilors are questioning whether the resolution is relevant to city business.

An amendment to the state Constitution that would allow Minnesota to legally recognize only opposite-sex unions is before voters in a statewide referendum in November 2012.

Councilor Todd Fedora says the resolution has "nothing to do with the city of Duluth.'' Fedora says the city has no business telling people how to vote in the referendum. But, council President Sharla Gardner says the city has traditionally taken the lead on many social issues.

The Duluth News Tribune reports Gardner thinks marriage rights are an issue of concern to many Duluth residents.
