PAYNESVILLE, MN (KNSI) - Stearns County deputies say a Paynesville man faces possible DUI charges as well as several other counts he allegedly started a crash last night, then tried to run from officers.
Police say 39-year-old Brooks Gunderson turned his van in front of another vehicle as he drove on County Road 34 east of Paynesville just after 8 o-clock last night. The crash injured the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 36-year-old Shawn Klaphake, but Gunderson jumped back in the van and took off.
A witness identified Gunderson after deputies found him trying to hide in the garage at his home a short time later. The van proved too big for the garage, however and even damaged the structure. Gunderson then tried to run into the house to escape, but he didn't get far.
Police arrested Gunderson on several charges, including driving under the influence and criminal operation of a vehicle resulting in injury. Today Klaphake is in fair condition today at St. Cloud Hospital.
