Minneapolis, Minn. (KNSI) The updated U. S. Drought Monitor map released today places large portions of northwest, west central, southwest, and south central Minnesota in the extreme drought category.

Over 40 percent of Minnesota is now in extreme or severe drought. The remainder of Minnesota falls in the moderate drought category.

All counties south and west of the Minnesota River are in extreme drought.

Extreme drought conditions extend into all of Kandiyohi County, most of Swift County and the southern half of Stearns County.

Topsoil moisture across 81 percent of Minnesota's landscape is rated short or very short.
