MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The defense contends a Roseville man didn't intend to kill anyone when he mowed down a group of University of Minnesota students with his car last April.

Jurors heard opening statements Monday in Timothy Bakdash's murder trial.

The defense contends Bakdash just wanted to scare someone he believed started a fight with him outside a Dinkytown bar. Defense attorney Joe Tamburino says Bakdash, who was drunk and high at the time, didn't realize he had struck Benjamin Van Handel of Appleton, Wis., until he was told the next day that a young man was seriously hurt. Van Handel later died.

The Star Tribune reports the prosecution says a passenger tried to make Bakdash stop and asked, "Why did you do that?''

The prosecution contends Bakdash answered, "They deserved it.''
