COLD SPRING, Minn. (KNSI) A Cold Spring police officer who died in the line of duty last night was shot twice.

Thirty one year-old Tom Decker was called to check on a possibly suicidal male. When he and another officer arrived at the scene behind Winners Bar and Grill in Cold Spring, Decker was hit by gunfire and died. His body was taken to St. Paul where the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy.

Within an hour of the shooting, police arrested 34 year-old Ryan Michael Larson of Cold Spring. He was taken to the Stearns County Jail where he faces a charge of murder.

Decker was a hometown police officer. He grew up on a farm near Cold Spring, and graduated from ROCORI High School. After obtaining a Law Enforcement degree from Alexandria Technical College in 2002, Decker went to work as a policeman in Isle, Watkins and Kimball before landing in Cold Spring in March of 2006.

Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones says Decker was an exemplary officer with a great sense of humor.

Decker leaves behind a wife and four young children.
