Dayton tax proposal being heard

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Minnesota lawmakers are hearing from the public on Gov. Mark Dayton's proposals to overhaul the state's tax code.

The House Taxes Committee holds a Friday afternoon hearing at the Capitol to get public testimony on the proposals. That committee already met late into the evening Wednesday listening to feedback on Dayton's plans.

The Democratic governor wants to lower the sales tax rate but apply it to more purchases, raise income taxes on the state's highest earners, reduce the state's business property taxes and corporate income taxes, and offer $500 property tax rebates to all Minnesota homeowners.

Lawmakers learned Thursday that a projected state deficit has shrunk by more than $400 million, which could increase pressure to soften or eliminate some of Dayton's requested Dayton's tax hikes.
