FARGO, N.D. (KNSI) The CEO of American Crystal Sugar Co. says the company is still willing to negotiate with workers who have been locked out of their jobs for more than 16 months.

David Berg made those comments Thursday after a delegation of workers and community members showed up at the cooperative's annual meeting of shareholders and pleaded with the company to end the lockout.

Berg says the company will "talk earnestly" about the contract if a federal mediator calls for more negotiations.

Union representatives on Thursday tried to deliver boxes of what they said were petitions calling for the end of the lockout but were not allowed into the shareholders' meeting.

Berg says he didn't think it would have been a good idea to interrupt the session.
