ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Local crime statistics and prevention tips were the main event this morning at the St. Cloud Police Headquarters.
The department, in conjunction with the St. Cloud Downtown Council, sponsored a presentation designed to present information, debunk myths, and help downtown businesses head off trouble before it begins.
The several dozen attendees heard from St. Cloud Community Service Officer John Justin, who informed them that most crime victims are targeted by someone they know.
In fact, a person's chances of being the victim of a random crime is less than a fraction of 1 percent.
Justin says St. Cloud is faring better when it comes to violent and random crimes than cities around the county in a similar population bracket, though larceny and car theft numbers are slightly high.
Justin also provided downtown business owners with information on how to protect their property from becoming a target of crime; namely, maintaining the grounds and installing security cameras.
The presentation wrapped with a question and answer session.
All told, 4,144 crimes were reported in St. Cloud for the year 2011.
