ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A man who alleged stole a vehicle from in front of a St. Cloud home was arrested after leading police on a half-mile pursuit and jumping out of the moving SUV before it collided with a tree early Thursday, according to a St. Cloud police spokesman.
Police were called to investigate reports of a vehicle stolen from a home on the 2500 block of 3rd Street North just after 6 a.m. Thursday, St. Cloud police Sgt. Jeff Jenssen said.
Officers spotted the stolen Ford Expedition a short time later near 9th Street and 33rd Avenue North and tried to stop that vehicle before the driver took off, Jenssen said.
The driver, identified as Frederick Neal Bishop, 47, of St. Cloud, led officers on a half-mile chase. The pursuit ended along the 3100 block of Park Drive North when Bishop allegedly jumped out of the vehicle just before it struck a tree.
Police said Bishop fled the scene on foot, but was captured moments later on 15th Street North by St. Cloud police officers working with a Stearns County K-9 officer.
Bishop, 47, was booked into the Stearns County Jail on charges including fleeing police officers, felony auto theft and possession of stolen property.
Bishop suffered minor injuries while jumping from the SUV, but did not require medical attention. No one else was hurt during the pursuit, Jenssen said.
