CHICAGO (AP) — Police say DNA evidence has led to the arrest of a suspect in the slaying of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a Chicago alley in 2009.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced Wednesday that 47-year-old Rene Valentin-Matos has been extradited from Cold Spring, Minnesota to face charges of criminal sexual assault and homicide.
Jahmeshia Conner was last seen alive November 15th, 2009, walking to catch a bus that would've taken her home. Her body was later found in an alley. The Cook County medical examiner's office said she'd been strangled.
Her family has said police misclassified her as a runaway and could have done more to find her after she was reported missing.
Valentin-Matos is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
