ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Thousands of Minnesotans will be in St. Cloud for Hockey Day Minnesota 2018, which has Mayor Dave Kleis excited about the economic benefits for the city's businesses.
Kleis says hotels, retail shops and restaurants will see an immediate impact from Hockey Day Minnesota, but there's some lasting economic impacts as well.
"And it's not always just the impact that takes place during the time you have the event, but it's the impact that folks have if they have good, positive memories, they'll be back."
Officials from this year's Hockey Day Minnesota host city weren't expecting to see such an economic boom in their local businesses from the one day event.
"We talked to Stillwater which hosted the last one, they didn't realize actually how beneficial it was, they were excited about it but until after it takes place they realize how important it is."
Kleis says with St. Cloud's rich hockey history and the event's location at Lake George, this will be the best Hockey Day Minnesota yet.
All proceeds raised from the day-long event will benefit St. Cloud area youth hockey programs.
No word yet on which Minnesota high school or college hockey teams will be facing off in the annual Minnesota hockey celebration, that in past years culminated in St. Paul with a Minnesota Wild game.
