ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - CentraCare Health has launched a Gender Medicine program to serve the needs of the transgender community.

On Tuesday, CentraCare Clinic launched Gender Medicine services at CentraCare Health Plaza.

A news release from CentraCare Health says the program provides transgender members of the community with family medicine, urology, OB/GYN and behavioral health services in a compassionate and inclusive environment.

CentraCare says its mission is to improve the health of every patient, every day, and the Gender Medicine program is another way of delivering on that commitment.

CentraCare says the National Institute of Health has identified the LGBTQ community as a health disparity population, and transgender individuals have limited primary care options for their unique health care needs, underscoring the need to improve access to care through initiatives like the Gender Medicine program.

"Societies across the globe are seeking to comprehend the complexities of gender, and we are proud to lead the way in Central Minnesota," said Joni Steffens, director of Sexual and Gender Medicine at CentraCare Health.

"The Gender Medicine program is integrated in its approach and comprehensive in the services provided. Equally important, we offer a supportive environment that is free of judgment."

The Gender Medicine program is located in the Specialty Care Center at the CentraCare Health Plaza at 1900 CentraCare Circle.
