ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Carter and Abigail topped the year-end list of the most popular names given to children born at St. Cloud Hospital in 2011, according to the hospital's Family Birthing Center.
Among girls, Abigail was tops, followed by Emma, Ella, Sophia and Chloe. Grace, Zoey, Ava, Olivia and Aubrey rounded out the top 10. As for boys, Carter was no. 1, just topping Mason and Blake. Also in the top 10: Jackson, Jacob, William, Evan, Noah, Benjamin and Logan.
Carter returned as the top baby name for boys after tumbling to no. 5 in 2010. Carter was the most popular boys name in 2008 and 2009. Abigail clear surged in popularity in 2011, moving from no. 9 in 2010 to the top spot last year.
Family Birthing Center director Deb Hall said most parents come prepared for their big day -- but often, that big decision isn't set in stone.
"The majority of parents come in with at least one or maybe two names. Sometimes, they want to see the baby and come up with what name would be most appropriate," Hall said.
And Hall said soon-to-be moms and dads will often take their naming cues from what popular in the popular culture as well.
"Sometimes Hollywood trends can affect (the top 10). If there's a popular name on a TV show, sometimes we see that name emerge," Hall said. She said Mason saw a big boost in popularity, likely due to appearance of Kourtney Kardashian's newborn Mason on the TV show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."
St. Cloud Hospital helped deliver 2,662 babies in 2011, a slight decline from the 2,682 born in 2010.
