ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The first phase of the largest power grid transmission overhaul in the upper Midwest in 30 years crackled to life as the first segment of the CapX2020 project was energized Wednesday, according to an XCel Energy spokesperson.
The 345-kilowatt, 28-mile segment connecting the new Quarry substation near St. Cloud with the existing Monticello substation became the first portion of the massive multi-state power supply upgrade to go into service.
"This transmission line, completed on time and on budget, is an important piece of the regional transmission grid...enhancing electricity service reliability and allowing for future growth and economic development in the area," XCel vice president of transmission Teresa Mogensen said.
With the St. Cloud to Monticello segment completed, crews will turn their attention to extending the line from St. Cloud to Alexandria next year. The finished 700-mile, $2 billion project will eventually bring the line to Fargo, North Dakota by late 2012.
