ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - The American Cancer Society is looking for 300,000 volunteers nationwide to join in an unprecedented research project for a cure, and they're signing people up for it all over the St. Cloud area.
The Cancer Prevention Study, or CPS-3, is a national initiative designed to identify what kinds of factors - genetic or lifestyle - lead to a higher rate of cancer.
Area members of the American Cancer Society are spending the day enrolling volunteers at Auto Value on Clearwater Road in St. Cloud.
Tim Feddema, Auto Value's Marketing manager, is also a volunteer in the study. He says, family circumstances prompted him to join the fight against cancer.
"My wife is a two-time cancer survivor. She had breast and colon cancer starting back in 2000. Also at that time, two of my sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer, and my father had already passed away," Feddema says. "So, I thought, with all of these things going on with my family, I had better do something to help find a cure. So I started helping in 2000, and that brings us to today."
In order to be eligible for the study, you must be between 30 and 65 years old, never have had cancer, and be willing to fill out a survey every two years for an indefinite amount of time.
