MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Senate has settled a lawsuit brought by a former staffer who was fired after he had an affair with the chamber's majority leader.

Michael Brodkorb will be paid $30,000 in the settlement he and the Senate announced Thursday.

Brodkorb argued he was wrongfully terminated after his affair was exposed. He said that female staffers who carried on affairs were treated differently.

Senate leaders had insisted his firing was lawful but the case had cost the state more than $300,000 in attorney fees.

Brodkorb says the settlement is a weight off his shoulders.

The Senate released a statement saying Brodkorb had admitted he couldn't prove his claims. The chamber's statement said the settlement matched the severance Brodkorb was offered before he sued.
