ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - St. Cloud police were warning area residents to avoid unscrupulous landscapers bilking homeowners on fraudulent tree removal services.
Department officials said police had received several recent reports of landscaping and tree services offering to remove trees and stumps for upfront cash payments.
PROTECT YOURSELF: Investigate potential businesses through the Minnesota Better Business Bureau
However, once the tree is removed, some of the landscapers are leaving stumps behind or demanding more money to remove the stump before again leaving without taking out the stump.
Police advised residents to demand a written contract and not to provide all the payment in cash before work is completed.
Homeowners should also get references from any company they are considering doing business with as well as check on the company's history through the Better Business Bureau, police said.
