ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Before you settle in for the annual Thanksgiving dinner gorging, how about a little exercise first to balance it out?
Area beverage titan Bernick's is kicking off their new year-round Family Fitness Series when they host the 1st annual St. Cloud Wishbone Walk-Run Thursday, a non-competitive, family-friendly 1-mile, 2-mile and 5K run-walk around Whitney Park.
Bernick's spokeswoman Kerri Winter said the varied lengths mean there's a course made for nearly all family members. As for the initial interest in the Thanksgiving Day event, Winter said it is already exceeding their expectations.
"The goal was 300 people and, as of Sunday, we have 650 people registered to participate," Winter said.
The run-walk is the first of four events sponsored by Bernick's over the next year aimed at increasing the level of physical activity in families within the community.
"Being fit is not a one-time commitment. Being fit and getting out and being healthy, you have to be continually doing it," Winter said. "What better way of doing it than with your family and having fun as well?"
The event is co-sponsored by the St. Cloud Area Family YMCA, the St. Cloud Times and KNSI sister station KCLD.
Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, running up until the start of the 2-mile and 5K routes at 8 a.m. The 1-mile event begins at 9 a.m. The cost is $5 for individuals, $10 for an entire family or free if you're already a St. Cloud YMCA member.
Morning activities for kids also include kids fitness classes and games, free play in the YMCCA kids gym, Wally Ball, X-Box Kinect, ping pong and more.
