DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - The lack of snow has caused organizers to cancel the annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
WDIO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/yCoQLY) the board of directors met on Sunday and determined conditions are not safe enough for the mushers, dogs and volunteers to hold the race Jan. 29.
In 2007, lack of snow near Duluth forced the race to move its starting line at least twice — once to Two Harbors and once to Grand Portage.
Race coordinator Pat Olson has said moving it again this year isn't an option because logistical issues make rescheduling difficult, among other reasons.
