COLD SPRING, Minn. (KNSI) A Cold Spring police officer has been shot and killed while conducting a routine check near a bar.

Stearns County Chief Deputy Bruce Bechtold says the officer was killed late Thursday evening in an alley behind Winners Sports Bar and Grill in Cold Spring.

A suspect has been arrested but police have not released his name. Nor has Bechtold released the officer's name. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.

The last Stearns County officer killed in the line of duty was St. Joseph officer Brian Klinefelter, who was shot in 1996 while attempting to arrest three robbery suspects.
