BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota is warning you about mystery calls that could end up costing you.
These calls are brief, and come from international prefixes. In most cases, people have reported their cell phone ringing once before the call disconnects. Scammers count on the curious victims to call back, leading to hefty charges. The best policy being to ignore calls from strange numbers and resist the temptation to call back.
Dan Hendrickson from the Minnesota division of the better business bureau says that the scam comes from the Caribbean where computers generate the phone calls.
Some of the area codes to watch out for include;
(473) - Grenada
(809) - Dominican Republic
(876) - Jamaica
(284) - British Virgin Islands
(268) - Antigua
The BBB advises people to watch their cellphone statements closely and to contact their carrier immediately if strange or unauthorized charges are noticed.
