WINONA, Minn. (AP) - The Winona County sheriff's office is asking for the public's help in solving the death of a newborn baby found floating in the Mississippi River.
Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand says the infant girl was found in the river six miles east of Winona at 2 p.m. Monday.
Brand says the baby was in a plastic bag floating downstream. He says the newborn weighed about 7 pounds.
Authorities don't know the cause of death yet. The body was taken to the Dakota County medical examiner in Hastings for an autopsy.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating along with the Winona County sheriff's office and county attorney's office.
