SARTELL, Minn. (KNSI) Demolition of buildings at the former Verso paper mill site in Sartell is a step closer to getting underway.

At a special meeting Thursday night, the Sartell City Council approved an interim use permit that's required before demolition crews can begin their work.

Demolition work is expected to take 15 to 16 months to complete, at a cost of $5.1 million.

A company called American Iron and Metal (AIM) bought the Verso property following a May 2012 explosion and fire.

The company says up to 95-percent of the materials will be recycled. The only buildings that will remain standing are the warehouse, the office building and the hydro-electric dam operations.

Sartell Mayor Joe Perske says the demolition is sad, but it's time to move forward

Perske is hoping redevelopment plans will be announced soon
