ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) When the 2014 Winter Olympic Games begin in Sochi, Russia in less than two weeks, St. Cloud will be represented, and a local family will be there to witness the games live.
Jim Schleper and his family leave February 5th to watch daughter Anne Schleper play for the Team USA women's olympic hockey team.
Schleper says the support they've been receiving from the community, "is certainly pretty cool. Annie has voiced that herself. It's amazing the support she feels coming from the community. "
The Schlepers will be staying in a cruise ship on the Black Sea while they're at the games. Jim says it's a, "unique deal. There weren't a lot of options on the hotel front, so a number of parents from the teams will be staying on one of the ships."
As for concerns about security during the games, Jim says, "it certainly is on the mind." But he says the only way they'd miss the games is if the "government refused to let us go."
Anne Schleper has been training with her teammates in Boston. The opening ceremonies are February 7th. Team USA plays their first Olympic game the following day.
Tuesday will be recognized as Anne Schleper Day in St. Cloud, with a program held in her honor at Cathedral High School that day.
