ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) As a new school year begins at St. Cloud State University on Monday, so does a new collaboration between the St. Cloud Police Department and St. Cloud State University.

Police Chief Blair Anderson says three officers now patrol the area on and around campus.  He says they were phased in over the past two weeks to familiarize themselves with the university and get "face time" with the faculty.

Anderson says the boundary the officers will patrol includes not only the campus, but neighborhoods around it. The area they'll cover was set up in cooperation with SCSU officials. He says think of it as, "another smaller beat in our city."

Anderson says the hope is that by having a visual presence in that area, crime will drop. In the chief's words, "our greatest tool is our presence."

He calls the partnership between the city police department and the university, "long overdue."

The partnership was first announced by Mayor Dave Kleis during his State of the City address last spring.
