ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) A fire late Saturday night destroyed a school building in St. Cloud.
The fire at the Roosevelt Early Childhood Center at 3015 Third Street North was called in a little after 11:30 pm.
St. Cloud Fire Chief Bill Mund says the first arriving engine found light smoke showing, and then found significant fire in the roof area once they got to the second floor.
He says the building has several roof lines, which made it difficult to get to the fire.
Heay equipment was brought in Sunday morning to demolish what little was left of the building. Mund says, "it was the only way to get at all of the fire. If we weren't doing this, we'd be back here. It would just keep smoldering."
Mund says the adjacent Boys and Girls Club, "seems to be fine. That should have no problems."
The cause is under investigation. Mund says there were reports from neighbors reporting a "loud bang" which might correspond with a lightning strike, but he says it's still too early to confirm that as the cause of the fire.
There were no reports of injuries. Fire departments from St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids, Sartell, Waite Park, St. Augusta and Rockville fought the blaze.
