ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) The St. Cloud City Council last night approved spending about $30,000 to restore a statue of Abe Lincoln that sits at 54 Fourth Avenue North in the former Empire Park.
Mayor Dave Kleis says after the restoration work is finished, the plan is to move the statue to a more visible location near the Mississippi River behind the River's Edge Convention Center.
The statue was commissioned in 1916 and dedicated in 1918. In recent years, it has fallen into disrepair and is considered to be in poor condition.
The restoration work will be paid for with local option sales tax revenue and perhaps some grant monies as well. The mayor says it will take about a year to complete.
